STUTTGART, Germany – World championship team member Sydney Sawa of the Calgary Gymnastics Centre reached the final on beam this weekend and finished eighth in the event at an 18-country World Cup gymnastics champion.

Fei Cheng, a triple Olympic medallist this past August, led a Chinese golden sweep in women’s competition winning three of the four finals including the beam event with a 15.425 score. Lauren Mitchell of Australia was second at 15.150 and Yilin Yang of China third at 15.075. Sawa totalled 12.575.

Sawa, 16, competed on all four apparatus. She was also 12th on vault, 13th on floor and 17th on uneven bars. This season Sawa won a bronze medal on floor at the national championships. She was a member of Canada’s 14th place team at last year’s worlds, also held in Stuttgart.
