BECKFORD STARS IN LEEDS ROMP
Beckford - hat-trick hero for Leeds. BECKFORD STARS IN LEEDS ROMP
Jermaine Beckford completed a hat-trick as Leeds cruised into the second round of the FA Cup with an emphatic 5-2 victory over Northampton at Sixfields Stadium.
But the game was effectively over by the midway point as Leeds raced into a 4-1 lead thanks to some clinical finishing and poor defending.
Beckford raced onto David Prutton’s flick-on to beat Frank Fielding with a first time finish after 13 minutes. And Leeds increased their advantage 15 minutes later when Mark Hughes deflected a Jonathan Howson shot past a wrong-footed Fielding.
Either side of Leeds’ second goal, keeper David Lucas pulled off two fingertip saves to deny Liam Davis and Danny Jackman. But Leeds grabbed a third after 41 minutes when Ben Parker’s speculative long-range effort was completely misjudged by Fielding.
Jason Crowe gave Cobblers a glimmer of hope when he headed home from Jackman’s corner a minute before the break but in first-half stoppage time Beckford cut in from the left before beating Fielding with a fierce drive.
Beckford completed his hat-trick 10 minutes after the restart when he raced on to Neil Kilkenny’s pass to round Fielding with ease.
Crowe grabbed Northampton’s second goal in the closing stages when he headed home from a Luke Guttridge corner.
