TOP RANKED VOLLEYBALL TEAMS IN CANADA HEAD TO OSHAWA FOR THE 2009 DC KILLER INSTINCT CUP

Oshawa, Ont. – Durham College is set to host some of the nation’s top collegiate female volleyball teams at the 21st annual Killer Instinct Cup from January 9-10, 2009.

The tournament will serve off the new year of OCAA women’s volleyball, with play set to commence at noon on Friday, January 9 at the Campus Recreation & Wellness Centre (CRWC) in Oshawa, Ont. Play will continue through Saturday, January 10 with the championship final scheduled for 5:30 p.m.

The Lords will have to be on the top of their game if they hope to win this year’s edition of the tournament as the defending champion Mohawk Mountaineers return to defend their title. Last year, Mohawk only dropped one set enroute to the victory. This season, the Mountaineers are 8-3 in conference play and is third in the provincial rankings.

The top-ranked and undefeated Humber Hawks also look to take a run at the title, which they last won in 2006. Humber is 10-0 this season, dominating opponents having not lost a single set. Lionel Groulx and Bois de Boulogne of Quebec will also be making the road trip for the tournament. The Quebec powerhouses are both national contenders as Lionel Groulx is ranked seventh in the country while Bois-de-Boulogne is 12th.

This year marks the 21st anniversary of the Durham College women’s volleyball tournament, and the ninth year in its current format.
Milaine Theriault and Graham Nishikawa Take Giant Stride Forward in Pursuit of Canada's World Championship Cross-Country Ski Team

MILAINE THERIAULT AND GRAHAM NISHIKAWA TAKE GIANT STRIDE FORWARD IN PURSUIT OF CANADA’S WORLD CHAMPIONSHIP CROSS-COUNTRY SKI TEAM
—Marlis Kromm and Graeme Killick win junior women and men pursuit races—

CANMORE, Alta.—Milaine Theriault and Graham Nishikawa took a significant stride forward in their quest to qualify for Canada’s World Championship Teams after winning the women’s and men’s cross-country skiing pursuit races at the Haywood NorAm Series on Monday in Canmore, Alta.

Theriault, of St. Quentin, N.B., pulled a golden performance out of the hat to win the women’s 15-kilometre pursuit race, which combines 7.5 kilometres of classic skiing followed by another 7.5 kilometres of skate skiing. Athletes enter a transition zone between the two legs with the clock still running. Theriault, who has been sick in bed for the last five days, clocked a winning time of 44 minutes 13.7 seconds.

“It was definitely much better than I expected today,” said Theriault, who finally got on skis for the first time in eight days yesterday. “I wasn’t even going to race, but I did and I pulled it out of I don’t know where. It was very enjoyable out there and maybe rest is a good thing.”

Theriault, who decided to make a comeback to qualify for Canada’s World Cup Team after taking the year off after her third trip to the Olympics in 2006, took a huge step forward to achieving her goal with Monday’s strong performance.

“This was a big race and the only qualifier for distance skiers so it was important for sure,” said Theriault, who has been training independently throughout her comeback this summer. “I had a great summer of training and I’m glad that I will qualify to race at the World Cup in Whistler, and hopefully get my way back to racing on the World Cup circuit regularly again.”

Theriault was pushed to the finish line by another young Canuck making her comeback to elite racing form after missing last season with a leg injury. Brittany Webster, of Caledon, Ont. had powerful legs in the women’s pursuit where she finished second at 44:14.0. Edmonton’s Madeleine Williams was third (45:02.1).

Calgary’s Marlis Kromm won the junior women’s 10-kilometre pursuit race with a time of 34:03.8.

Meanwhile, Canada’s top men continue to exchange positions on the podium at the Canmore stop of the Haywood NorAm Series. Graham Nishikawa moved up from his second-place finish yesterday in the individual start race to finish first in the men’s 30-kilometre pursuit. The Whitehorse, Yukon native won the dash to the finish line with a time of 1:17:19.7.

Frederic Touchette, of St-Ferréol-les-Neiges, Que., finished second at 1:17:20.7, while Olympian Dan Roycroft, of Port Sydney, Ont., grabbed the final spot on the podium with a time of 1:17:24.9.

Graeme Killick, of Banff, Alta., won the junior men’s 20-kilometre pursuit race with a time of 55:57.8.

Cross Country Canada is the governing body of cross-country skiing in Canada. Its 51,000 members include athletes, coaches, officials and skiers of all ages and abilities, including those on Canada’s National Ski Teams and Para-Nordic Ski Teams.
National Women Field Hockey team to compete against Ireland

The Canadian National Women’s Field Hockey team will travel to Dublin, Ireland January 9 – 19th for a series of test matches versus the Irish. The tour is in preparation for the 2009 Pan American Cup taking place in Bermuda in early February.

“It is a new beginning. With all the retirements, we have seven new faces with a cap (international game) average of 25. The players and staff are looking forward to competing after many months of training,” says head coach Louis Mendonca (Thornhill, ON).

“I am confident the team will bring grit, heart, and passion to every match they compete in. It is very important we retain the lessons learnt, to ensure our preparation for the Pan Am Cup in on track.”

The last competition for the Canadian women was a fourth-place finish at May’s Olympic Qualifying tournament held on home soil in Victoria, British Columbia.
KELSEY SERWA SCORES BIG WITH PODIUM FINISH AT ST. JOHANN WORLD CUP SEASON OPENER

ST. JOHANN, AUT (January 5, 2009) – In her first World Cup Ski Cross event ever, Canada’s Kelsey Serwa (Kelowna, BC) rockets to a bronze medal. A rookie to the team, Serwa surprised all as she held on, in difficult conditions, to secure a 3rd place at the St. Johann, AUT World Cup night race.

Looking impressive in her first heat, Serwa had 3rd lane choice and was able to secure the hole shot out of the start and held it to the finish. In the semifinal round Serwa, looking impressive again took the hole shot but lost the lead on a difficult right hand turn but was able to hold on to 2nd place and secure a spot in the final.

Drawing a difficult start, Serwa left the gate and settled into 4th spot behind Marion Josserand (FRA), Katharina Gutensohn (AUT) and World #1 Ophelie David (FRA). Skiing smart and waiting for an opening Serwa watched as David prereleased out of her ski and was forced from the race, leaving Serwa in 3rd spot on the day.

“I had a really difficult lane from the start and knew I had my work cut out for me. Let’s face it I was already pretty excited about being in the final of my first Ski Cross World Cup ever and when I saw Ophelie loose a ski I thought ‘whoa! I’m on the podium!’ at that point I wanted to continue to ski smart to the finish.” Said Serwa

After being released from the Canadian Alpine Ski Team at the end of last season Kelsey Serwa (Kelowna, BC.) had some quick thinking to do about her future. Alpine spring events in Quebec had just finished and there was a tight window for her to hop a flight back to her native BC to compete in the Canadian Championships where she placed 2nd.

When asked about the events of the last year Serwa said, “Third place in today’s race at St. Johann, AUT pretty much validates the decision to make the move to Ski Cross. It’s really exciting to be a part of a new Olympic Sport and get the opportunity to possibly compete in the Olympics in front of a home town crowd!”

On the Men’s side, Chris DelBosco (Sudbury, ONT) had a strong day finishing the in 7th spot. DelBosco battled though the heat after being seeded with world #1, Thomas Kraus (CZE) in each heat. In the semifinal heat DelBosco was sitting in second spot behind Casey Puckett but was unable to fend off Andreas Matt (AUT).

“I was actually pretty psyched to be seeded with Kraus in every heat, he’s the world number one and it’s always great to gage yourself against the best. I feel really good about today, it’s a better start than last season and it feels like I’m picking up where I left off.” Said DelBosco

Another rookie Brady Leman (Calgary, AB) was Canada’s top skier in yesterdays qualifier but was eliminated in the 2nd round after a tangle off a jump with Sylvain Miaillier (FRA). Leman, also competing in his first World Cup race, finished the day in an impressive 11th place.

Veteran Stanley Hayer (Calgary, AB), started the first heat with a hole shot but lost ground on a fall away turn and was unable to recover after being passed by Ted Piccard (FRA) and Robin Lenel (FRA)

RESULTS FROM ST.
Nigel Clough's hopes of following in his father's footsteps and managing Derby are closer to realisation after Rams chairman Adam Pearson admitted on Monday he was one of the names on a "very small radar" being monitored by the club.

Clough, whose late father Brian managed Derby between 1967 and 1973 and led them to the old Division One title in 1972, has been heavily tipped to make the short move to Pride Park from Burton Albion to fill the Rams' vacant managerial post after Paul Jewell resigned a week ago.

Pearson has said that he wants to make an appointment within the next few days and Clough's emotional ties with the club, coupled with his impressive work at Burton, would make him a popular choice.

Clough's side are currently 13 points clear at the top of the Blue Square Premier League and therefore on course for a first-ever promotion to the Football League.

"Certainly Nigel has got lots of attributes you look for in a manager and I have spoken to (Burton chairman) Ben Robinson about him," Pearson said.

"But I speak to him often anyway because of the close connection between the two clubs. We did have a chat about Nigel but that is as far as it has gone.

"There are certainly other candidates on our shortlist but he is one who is on our very small radar."

Pearson also revealed that current caretaker manager Chris Hutchings was on the shortlist of names.

Hutchings has been placed in temporary control of first-team affairs while Jewell's successor is found.

He oversaw Derby's slender 4-3 victory at non-league Forest Green in the FA Cup third round on Saturday and will remain in charge for tomorrow's Carling Cup semi-final first leg against Manchester United at Pride Park.

Pearson insists he remains a contender for the job, adding: "He is still very much in the frame. He came through a tricky test admirably on Saturday, especially given the start to the game that we had in going 2-0 down.

"He prepared the team well and the training ground is buoyant, so for that alone he is on the shortlist."
